Puberty and the genetic diathesis of disordered eating attitudes and behaviors.
10 Nov 2009 | 6:38 amTwin studies from the Minnesota Twin Family Study (MTFS) suggest negligible genetic effects on eating pathology before puberty but increased genetic effects during puberty. However, an independent study found no pubertal differences in genetic and environmental effects (R. Rowe, A. Pickles, E. Simonoff, C. M. Bulik, & J. L. Silberg, 2002). Discrepant results may be due to methodological differences. The MTFS studies divided twins at mid-puberty, whereas R. Rowe et al. (2002) divided twins based on menarche alone. In the present study, the authors aimed to reconcile discrepant findings by… -
Genetic and environmental influences on disordered eating: An adoption study.
10 Nov 2009 | 6:38 amTwin studies indicate significant genetic, but little shared environmental, influences on eating disorders. However, critics argue that study limitations constrain the conclusions that can be drawn. Adoption studies avoid many of these limitations, but to date, no adoption studies of eating pathology have been conducted. The current study was the first adoption study to examine genetic/environmental effects for disordered eating. Participants included 123 adopted and 56 biological female sibling pairs. Disordered eating (i.e., overall eating pathology, body dissatisfaction, weight… -
Men & Binge Eating Disorder
9 Nov 2009 | 7:21 amDid you ever wonder if your tendency to mindlessly overeat was just annoying or an actual problem? If so, don't feel bad. In our culture, it is sometimes difficult to determine. You often look to your weight as a diagnostic tool to say whether you are unhealthy or healthy. But, as a guest on Dr. Oz's TV show learned, your weight is only one piece of the puzzle. A doctor can help you look a little closer to what is going on inside your body. "Rocco" was a guest on the Dr. Oz show last week (See the video clip). This 53 year old man took a 28 day challenge that transformed him… -
[Review] Chronic dopaminergic stimulation in Parkinson's disease: from dyskinesias to impulse control disorders
8 Nov 2009 | 3:00 pmDopamine is an essential neurotransmitter for many brain functions, and its dysfunction has been implicated in both neurological and psychiatric disorders. Parkinson's disease is an archetypal disorder of dopamine dysfunction characterised by motor, cognitive, behavioural, and autonomic symptoms. While effective for motor symptoms, dopamine replacement therapy is associated not only with motor side-effects, such as levodopa-induced dyskinesia, but also behavioural side-effects such as impulse control disorders (eg, pathological gambling and shopping, binge eating, and hypersexuality), punding… -

Forum Post of the Week: Health Versus Weight
19 Nov 2009 | 9:09 pmHow do you answer the question of health versus weight? If you had to choose, would you get your weight where you want it, or would you be physically healthy? As this forum thread suggests, many with eating disorders choose differently than one might expect. It's a concrete example of distorted thinking. We can get fooled (by advertisements, for example) into wanting something even though it isn't healthy for us. But those with eating disorders are willing to make a conscious choice to sacrifice health for weight loss or weight maintenance. Is weight loss the best goal for you? What don't you… -

Misused Weight-Loss Drug
14 Nov 2009 | 7:35 amSo you create a weight-loss drug, Alli, and put it in an environment in which it's supposed to be given to people who are overweight...and then it ends up in the hands of people who aren't overweight. It's not a case of people getting the stuff on some kind of black market. It's people buying it over the counter in Ireland. According to licensing conditions, pharmacists in Ireland can't sell Alli to anyone who's of normal weight or underweight. But eight out of 20 pharmacies sold the drug to a researcher who is well under the "overweight" threshold. Not a good situation. But I wonder: How is… -
The Public Option Rises Again
9 Nov 2009 | 6:59 amApparently, reports of the death of the "public option" in current health care legislation were premature. The House of Representatives passed a health are reform bill that includes a health insurance plan offered by the federal government. The new bill, the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R.3962), replaces the previous bill (H.R.3200) originated in the House. H.R.3962 passed by the slimmest of margins, but passed nonetheless. What would this bill mean for you if the Senate passes similar legislation and it becomes law? If you don't have insurance coverage now, you probably will. If… -

2 Nov 2009 | 3:00 pmMicrographia is a condition, in which the sufferers write with small handwriting. Hypophonia is described as low volume speech. The patient also suffered from epilepsy. The onset of these symptoms, progress, and current status provides scope for discussing both the possible biological and psychodynamic etiology for these… -

All participants completed a brief questionnaire that included the EDE-Q, basic socio-demographic information, and self-reported height and weight.Overall levels of eating disorder psychopathology, as measured by the EDE-Q global score, were very similar. There were also no differences between groups on the EDE-Q subscales. However, analysis at the item level indicated that Singaporean women were more fearful… -

HAES has arrived!
17 Nov 2009 | 8:54 pmI was at a community health committee meeting today where a couple of new people were in attendance. One was an athletic trainer and the other a physician. It became apparent pretty quickly that neither of them were familiar with the concept of "Health at Every Size" (HAES). Sometimes it feels as if spreading the HAES approach is a very steep, up-hill battle. It pained me to listen to these two attendee's continual references to "weight" as if that were the only marker for fitness and health. When I attempted to interject a HAES perspective, it was immediately clear that my words were falling… -
FEAR: A motivator or immobilizer?
13 Nov 2009 | 10:50 amOver the past few weeks our work for Andrea's Voice has taken us to Pennsylvania and me to Utah. In that time we presented to nearly 1,000 students, professionals, parents and treatment providers. At each of our destinations we spoke of the "fear" that can so often immobilize us and keep us "stuck." I recently received an email from a Bay area therapist, Linda Shanti McCabe, PsyD, announcing a workshop she's conducting. In a portion of her email she talks about this "fear:" I have been noticing a lot of fear recently, the way fear is a constant companion popping up, wanting attention,… -
Andrea's birthday
30 Oct 2009 | 10:51 amYesterday we celebrated what would have been Andrea's 30th birthday. It so very surreal to think that she has been gone for 10 years and would be beginning her third decade. For us she is forever 19. I started the day with an early, early morning hot tub soak and the praying of the rosary. Although my spiritual path has veered away from the Catholicism of my youth, I began the ritual of praying the rosary on Andrea's birthday a number of years ago. The second host family Andrea lived with in Spain when she was 14 were devout Catholics and Andrea was taught to pray the rosary with them. I use… -
Why is a "Fat-Talk" free environment important?
21 Oct 2009 | 9:06 amBy now I would imagine that you are all aware that this is Tri-Delta's "Fat-Talk Free" week. When I mentioned this at one of our local high schools a few weeks ago the "Why?" question arose. Why attempt to end fat talk (i.e.: Do I look fat in this? She shouldn't wear that! It's a shame...you have such a pretty face! I HATE my thighs! and on and on)? There are studies that present evidence that fat-talk actually lowers one's self-esteem which can lead to body hatred and possible problematic behaviors to attempt to feel better. There is also enough research to show that by the ages of two or… -

The reader's letter begins, "I am in a committed, three-year relationship with a great man. He has the genetic disposition to become overweight if he doesn't watch what he eats." This woman goes on to talk about how she's let him know that she's not attracted to…

Dieters Can Experience Neurobiological Similarities Of Drug Addicts And Alcoholics

Bulimia, Binge Eating Respond To Talk Therapy
8 Oct 2009 | 5:00 amAlthough most people with bulimia and binge eating disorders wait many years before seeking help, a new review shows that psychological treatment can make a large difference and that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective talk therapy for these disorders. People with bulimia experience cycles of disordered eating behavior in which they overeat and then purge, often by self-induced vomiting or taking laxatives. -

The Role of The Family in Eating Disorders
19 Nov 2009 | 6:58 am“It’s all my fault.” “I was always dieting and watching what I ate. That must be the reason!” “I must have been too strict - I pushed her too hard.” “Maybe if I wasn’t always saying how I hope she doesn’t get my body shape, this would not have happened?” Do any of these statements sound familiar? If they do, you are not alone. Parents of children with eating disorders often wonder if they said or did something that may have caused their child to develop the eating disorder. Many times, this can lead to… -
Don’t Weigh In On This Technology!
13 Nov 2009 | 5:40 amOn the heels of the Smartphone controversy, another piece of technology is further enabling people to obsess and lament over their weight. The difference this time is that, instead of a private obsession with the number on the scale, this piece of modern equipment broadcasts a person’s weight for all to see over their twitter page. The technology in this case, happens to be a bathroom scale with a wireless connection to the internet. The company behind this gimmick, contends that by automatically programming your bathroom scale to share results of each weigh-in with your… -
Saying Goodbye to Ed…
30 Oct 2009 | 5:17 amIndividuals with eating disorders often express frustration because other people in their lives who have never had an eating disorder, just don’t seem to fully understand how difficult it is to live with this disease. Furthermore, once you have lived with an eating disorder, its often very difficult to imagine life without it - to imagine being recovered. The Center for Eating Disorders’ 2009 Fall Awareness event, on Sunday, October 25th, helped to address both of the above scenarios. Featured keynote speaker, Jenni Schaefer, visited Baltimore and spoke to a crowded… -
Application Awareness
26 Oct 2009 | 5:58 amDr. Harry Brandt, Director at the Center for Eating Disorders, was recently quoted in a blog entry on ChicagoTribune.com. The article discussed the negative impact that some smart phone applications can have on those individuals who are suffering from or are at-risk for developing an eating disorder. In light of this article, we’re re-posting an earlier entry we wrote on the subject in an attempt to generate awareness about this potentially dangerous trend. They can navigate you safely to your destination, identify a song playing in the background, and keep you busy with… -

Mindfulness Training for Eating Disorders.
3 Nov 2009 | 6:40 amMindfulness Training for Eating Disorders. Most eating disorders are linked to significant amounts of stress, mood disturbance, anxiety, phobias, substance abuse, and physical complications. All these factors have to be addressed when someone is trying to overcome an eating disorder. Mindfulness training is a technique which can help a person to cope with all these factors. Mindfulness means a calm awareness of body functions, feelings, emotions, thoughts and sensations. Mindfulness consists of paying attention to an experience of the present moment — without moving into thoughts from the… -
Magical Benefits of Meditation for people with Eating Disorders.
11 Oct 2009 | 8:03 pmMany researches have proven now that people with eating disorders get a lot of benefits from doing meditation. Eating disorder sufferers have disturbances in autonomic nervous system, problems with impulse control and many emotional problems. All these can be improved with regular meditation. You see, human beings are made up of three components—physical, mental and emotional. You can think of it as like a triangle with the same length sides. To correct eating disorders all the sides of triangle have to be balanced. The Mental side represents the knowledge people learn about their condition… -

Plus many people who do not have any diagnosis of mental or emotional disorders do not consider themselves happy. Adult Eating Disorders - How to Deal If the Person Doesn’t Admit Having One
27 Sep 2009 | 7:08 amIf you are dealing with an adult who suffers from an eating disorder, then you should adjust your talk to a relevant format. Remember, an adult may use stronger language than a child would use. Do not get angry. It will not do any good, and will probably make things worse. Plus, the sufferer will not want to confide in you. Remember that your appearance and tone of your voice should make her/him feel that you are coming with an open heart, and you do it only because you love her/him and care very much about the person: that you don’t have any intention of putting them down or… -
5 Crucial Steps to Cure Your Eating Disorder with the Power of Neuroplasticity.
24 Sep 2009 | 9:12 amNeuroplasticity is the ability of the human brain to change itself based on how we live our lives. Our brain consists of cells or neurons that are interconnected. It means that different life experiences and different behaviours are constantly changing the strength of these connections, by adding or removing connections, and by adding new cells. “Plasticity” relates to learning by adding or removing connections, or adding cells. According to the theory of neuroplasticity, thinking, learning, and acting actually change the brain’s physical structure or anatomy as well as functional…

17 Nov 2009 | 3:35 pmFiguring out how to get thin arms will not happen overnight. While there are certain approaches that are more effective than others, you will still have to put forth some degree of effort over a period of time. Most women, however, are not able to stay on track for the long haul. After all, most women can start a fitness program, but few can actually finish it. If only motivation could be bottled up and sold in a can. Unfortunately, it resides in a much more complicated and elusive place: your mind. So without further ado, here are 4 tips for staying motivated when learning how to get thin… -
Flabby Arms And Sugar Addictions
16 Nov 2009 | 12:26 pmThe research is crystal clear here: sugar addictions do exist. In fact, high sugar intakes alter levels of dopamine in the brain just as drugs do. Not a good scenario for your flabby arm goal. Unfortunately, if you have a high sugar intake your levels of insulin will be chronically elevated. And insulin completely blocks the burning of arm fat. In the end, you have to overcome any addiction to sugar you may have if you are really serious about getting lean and sexy arms. So without further ado, here is how to overcome a sugar addiction to get rid of flabby arms: 1. Embrace the withdrawal. -

Pre-Teen Obesity: An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth 100 Pound Cure
2 Nov 2009 | 2:24 pmWhether you live on the west coast or the east coast, the silent killer called obesity is aggressively moving through our communities. More than likely, if you are not directly affected, the chances are that you have friends or family members who are loosing control of their weight. In all honesty, we can not totally place the blame for this on the individuals themselves. Several studies have shown that for a number of people, their chemical and genetic makeup aide in their body’s ability to process certain fats. Sure being 100 plus pounds over weight might have been good in the Ice Age… -
How To Succeed With Arm Fat Loss
12 Oct 2009 | 1:30 pmIt is very common for women to get so caught up with the diet and exercise part of the arm fat equation that they forget to change how they think for optimal success. And changing your thought patterns is what will ultimately help you succeed. How is it that the right mental strategy is so vital? Because you can stay focused on a single goal for only so long. You have limits. And if your mental strategy is not in place, you will eventually fall off the bandwagon. So here are 6 tips for winning the war on arm fat: 1. Change how you value food. A cycle of anxiety, craving, and overconsumption
20 Nov 2009 | 9:12 amI have blogger's remorse for my earlier rant, so I'm pairing it with some hopeful information in understanding why dieting is not a good idea, AND an alternative:"Food might not be addictive on its own, but prohibiting it can set off a cycle of anxiety, craving, and overconsumption that for all purposes looks like addiction." -
Where outrage lives
20 Nov 2009 | 8:54 amWhy don't I join the fray of outrage over Kate Moss saying "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels?"Because I don't care. I find the opinions and actions and health of models irrelevant to eating disorder activism. What DOES concern me is a tragic over-valuing of the role of the media and a conflation of what that world does to healthy people (not good) and the symptoms we see in the mentally ill.Modelling surely does attract and exploit very tall thin pretty people, and does cause slightly less naturally tall thin pretty people to do unnatural things to compete with the former, and without a… -

This is going to pinch a bit
17 Nov 2009 | 5:07 amWithout getting into the very personal and emotional merits of arguments on all sides, what interests me about the news federal panel recommends reducing number of mammograms is that lots of consumers have been talking about this for years. Fifteen years ago, I remember reading the impassioned arguments of some in the breast cancer world that routine mammograms for younger women were causing more harm than good and that medicine still didn't have reliable ways to tell a dangerous cancer from one that would never cause harm.I got pretty sharp rebukes from two gynocologists during my 40s when I…

But according to a Nov. 8 article by Laura Davidson of the Sunday Mail newspaper, Moir’s appreciation for yoga isn’t related to fame or wealth – instead, it has to do with the practice’s ability to rescue her from the depths of an eating disorder:At age 16, Simone … was at death's door after years of suffering from anorexia. Giving up the religion of thinness for a more compassionate path
15 Nov 2009 | 7:21 amDear Readers, Those of you who have lived with an eating disorder for any length of time, either your child’s, your own, or both, know how all-consuming it can be. The disorder can take over your life to the point that you can barely think of anything else; your entire life becomes about serving your disorder.Author Michelle M. The power of positive feedback
8 Nov 2009 | 2:50 pmDear Readers, I’d like to share an email from one of my adult patients that made my day. It came from Alice, a forty-something professional woman who has struggled with bulimia and her weight since college, and read: ”Marcia, I want to say thank you for your Food Plan. As I stood in the workplace kitchen today to heat up my leftovers, I was surrounded by women eating horrible-looking Lean Cuisine lunches and slices of shiny, orange fat-free cheese. I thought, “Oh my God, I don’t eat food that I don’t like anymore!” It was an epiphany. I used to pack a… -
The smart use of rewards in working with your anorexic child
1 Nov 2009 | 8:43 pmOften Marcia works with young anorexic patients who are struggling to reach the healthy goal weight that the family, the doctor, and Marcia have agreed upon. Typically little gains are followed by losses, often caused by a stressful goings on in the adolescent or young adult’s life, power struggles between the patient and her (or his) parents, or ambivalence about recovery. Marcia’s patient Zoe came to her last appointment down 1.3 pounds, to 118.6 pounds. It was only 1.4 pounds away from her goal weight of 120 pounds, and yet that 1.4 pounds represents a huge psychic leap for Zoe,… -
Beware of the “Cookie Diet”
22 Oct 2009 | 7:29 pmI don’t usually address the latest fad diet, but the so-called Cookie Diet pushes my buttons. In today’s New York Times, an article entitled “A Few Cookies a Day to Keep the Pounds Away?” by Abby Ellin details the kooky regimen of a certain Dr. Sanford Siegel, whose Dr. Siegel ‘s Cookie Diet apparently has fans ranging from legal secretaries to celebrities singing its praises. The diet calls for eating six of Dr. Siegel’s cookies a day, and one “real” meal, for a total of about 1,000 calories. I have in jest called my Food Plan “the dessert diet” because I recommend… -
Chain restaurant calorie counts, a year later
6 Oct 2009 | 8:11 pmA story in today’s New York Times, Calorie Postings Don’t Change Habits, Study Finds , detailed evidence that posting calorie counts prominently at four fast food chains, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken, did not reduce the number of calories customers consumed. The study, which was conducted by researchers at New York University and Yale, tracked about 1,100 receipts of customers in poor black and Hispanic areas in New York City and Newark, N.J. It seems that in these neighborhoods, cost is a bigger factor than nutrition, and posting calories didn’t make…
