    23 Jan 2012 | 11:54 pm
Abstract  During the last 10 years, a series of exciting observations has led to a new theory of pathophysiology using insights from evolutionary biology and neuroendocrine immunology to understand the sequelae of chronic inflammatory disease. According to this theory, disease sequelae can be explained based on redirection of energy-rich fuels from storage organs to the activated immune system. These disease sequelae are highly diverse and include the following: sickness behavior, anorexia, malnutrition, muscle wasting–cachexia, cachectic obesity, insulin resistance with…
  • Reduced ghrelin production induced anorexia after rat gastric ischemia and reperfusion

    23 Jan 2012 | 10:00 pm
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is one of the most susceptible organs to ischemia. We previously reported altered gastric motility after gastric ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). However, there have also been few reports of alterations in the eating behavior after gastric I/R. Ghrelin is a GI peptide that stimulates food intake and GI motility. Although ghrelin itself has been demonstrated to attenuate the mucosal injuries induced by gastric I/R, the endogenous ghrelin dynamics after I/R has not yet been elucidated. The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between food…

  • A dentist tale

    Doris Smeltzer
    21 Jan 2012 | 1:02 am
I changed dentists about 15 years ago when a molar on my lower jaw, that had been cracked and injured, needed to be removed. This professional insisted that he had to also pull the corresponding tooth on the upper jaw as well. If not, this tooth would grow to fill the gap, causing all sorts of problems. I remember listening to this plan in stunned silence. Really. A perfectly healthy tooth needed to be pulled because of what might happen in the future?? I tried to talk my dentist out of this approach. Certainly we could pull the injured tooth and take a wait-and-see approach with the healthy…

Although they will not hear these words, I decided to share them with you: We live in an environment that has become increasingly “fat phobic.” I realize that what I am going to propose is not only a major shift away from our current weight-based paradigm of health but can be an uncomfortable proposition depending on how immersed and/or dedicated one is to the maintenance of this paradigm.  I ask, though, for you to open your heart as…

  • This makes the Georgia campaign even more manipulative

    22 Jan 2012 | 10:16 am
According to a story today in the Chattanooga Times Free Press, the heavy children shown in the state of Georgia's shaming, shameful Strong4Life campaign are child actors hired to pretend they have hypertension, no friends, and other negative qualities the ads associate with childhood obesity.Because . . . they couldn't find any fat children with those conditions who were willing to model for their ads?Maybe. Maybe not. Here I was worrying about how starring in an ad like this would affect a child like "Jaden" or "Maritza." It turns out there is no "Maritza," or rather, "Maritza" is actually…

  • What's wrong with Georgia's childhood obesity campaign

    6 Jan 2012 | 9:27 pm
My Aunt Selma was a fat teenager. Like most fat kids, she was deeply ashamed of her body. She tried many times to lose weight, and eventually hit on two strategies: cigarettes and bulimia. She died in excruciating pain, in large part from the abuse she’d heaped on her body for many years. But she died—and lived—thin. I think about Selma every time I hear about yet another new initiative to fight childhood obesity. The latest is Georgia’s “Strong 4 Life” campaign, which features black-and-white images and video clips of children talking about being fat. Several of the kids say they…

Does Every Woman Have an Eating Disorder?

  • Georgia. . .

    drstaceyny
    18 Jan 2012 | 10:55 am
A new campaign in Georgia targeted at childhood obesity has raised significant alarm  in the eating disorder community.  Specifically, many of us who treat eating disorders are concerned that the campaign focuses more on body size than on the promotion of healthy eating and exercise behaviors.  It is negative, shaming, and could actually encourage the development of eating disorders in those who may have such tendencies. As such, the Binge Eating Disorder Association has developed an online petition, with the hopes of arresting the campaign. What do you think?

By re-identifying your behavior will stop your eating disorder this has been proven more that once. Some of you may say, “How will re-identifying my behavior stop my eating disorder? I got this disease because I have an obsessive gene from my mother. You can’t eradicate this gene from my genetic makeup.” No, you can’t eradicate the unwanted gene from your geneticmakeup and we are not trying to do this. What we are trying to do here is to change your response to the thoughts and feelings your brain generates. Our genes have two kinds of fundamental properties. One of them…
  • Shame is one of the roots of anorexia and bulimia.

    admin
    10 Jan 2011 | 7:30 pm
Shame plays an important role in developing eating disorders because shame is a controlling device. Basically all people with anorexia or bulimia can recall being shamed or ashamed several times before their disorder began. Shame is complex. It extends from small things like parents or teachers saying to someone that she/he is a bit overweight and needs to lose weight, or to something more serious like physical or sexual assault. For a young vulnerable person even a wrong look or an inappropriate comment can be shameful and it can trigger control mechanisms in the brain. The simplest and most…

People often ask me about different side effects of bulimia: about short term, long term and the most dangerous ones.  This article is about short term effects which appear soon after bulimia begins.   People are also interested if the short term effects are 100% reversible or not. Well, probably most of the short term bulimia effects are reversible but it is also depends on the intensity of the bulimia. It is also depends on association with other medical and psychological problems the person as at the time they start being bulimic. So, I would say it is all down to the individual and for…

Bulimia causes damaging side effects to the body. It can also destroy the brain, heart and the soul of the person suffering from this eating disorder. There is no one system in the body that does not get affected by long term bulimia. What are the most dangerous side effects? – You may ask.  These are the effects people can die from.  Lets  look at them separately. Heart complications. Many eating disorder sufferers have irregular heartbeat, slow pulse or palpitations. All these abnormalities are extremely dangerous especially if the person continues with binging-purging.  People can…

  • Recovery from an eating disorder: it's not a number

    Laura (Collins) Lyster-Mensh
    22 Jan 2012 | 7:04 am
I'm often accused of being all about numbers and calories and percentiles. Guilty as charged: I am very focused on the medical restoration of eating disorder patients because without that there is no recovery at all - and too much of treatment and talk about eating disorders ignores this fact. But what is actual recovery, and how is it measured from the outside? This isn't something that can be analyzed by a chart or ticked off a list - but it can be described. F.E.A.S.T. published what I feel is the best list for parents, written by one of our Advisors, Cris Haltom. But I am adding this…

I'm preparing a presentation about the term "brain disorder" as applied to eating disorders. I'm interested to hear from friends and foes and thinkers, all: what does this term mean to you? How does it feel? When you first heard this term did it upset or enlighten you? If you don't use it, why? If you do, why?

Does weight loss cause or reveal the mental illnesses we call eating disorders? And, by way of correlary - does normalizing weight cure or mask mental illness? Or is weight change just a result of behaviors? When I think about it, the above are the questions that divide the eating disorder world and form the fault lines for the positions that divide us. Your thoughts?

At Eating Disorder Hope, we understand and empathize with the difficulties and struggles recovery may entail.  Perhaps one of the more challenging periods of recovery is the holiday season, a time that is often excessively centered on food.  Coming into the New Year can be equally taxing as it’s often characterized by impractical resolutions that can set up an individual for feelings of failure or inadequacy if these goals are left unmet.  Consistent dedication and persistence in one’s recovery allow for ongoing success in establishing freedom from an eating disorder, no…

It is a word so clearly defined yet recovery is not a defined experience.  What does this word really mean? How does it play out in life? How does it play out in and through a situation that so desperately is in need of recovery? Recovery is, as I like to call it a journey, different for all who embark upon it. Recovery enables you to gain confidence as you grow out of a life threatening disease and addiction.

WESTLAND, Mich. - A woman and her cat are safe after being rescued Friday morning from their burning condo in Westland. Patricia Stanton said she was alerted to the fire in her condo building on Spring Valley Drive by a neighbor. “A neighbor called, I was sleeping, and she said, ‘You got to get out there’s flames coming from your roof and smoldering,’” she said. Stanton, who has a disability, said she was quickly rescued by firefighters, who also went back in and got her cat, Sadie. “Everything’s gone, my neighbor’s, too. • Drop the Fad Diets in Favor of Real, Sustainable Weight Loss in 2012

    Ted Eads
    16 Jan 2012 | 9:02 am
With the New Year just behind us, it’s time to actually do something about that weight loss resolution you made. Whether it’s 15 or 150 pounds you’re trying to shed, no plan is easy. Despite what the newest fad might suggest, real weight loss is hard work. That’s not to say we haven’t all fallen victim to a fad diet or two in the past. They promise quick results, and we end up thinking: “Who knows, maybe this one really does work.” But, of course, it doesn’t. Maybe we lose five or six pounds, only to put on eight more the next month. The trickiest part is that when a diet…

Deviled eggs are just one of those side dishes that I can’t pass up. Every time the dish goes by, I grab two more. Those calories add up fast, though–and, when made using a standard recipe, they’re not particularly good for your heart. That’s why I can’t get enough of the heart health deviled eggs. They’re just as easy to make, but twice as good for you. 8 eggs, hard boiled, cut in half, yolks discarded 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese 1/4 cup light mayonnaise 1/4 cup green onion, finely minced 1/4 teaspoon celery seed 1 teaspoon Dijion mustard 2 Tablespoons…
  • The Truth Behind the Numbers of Holiday Weight Gain

    Ted Eads
    13 Dec 2011 | 2:17 pm
If you’re worried about holiday weight gain, you’re not alone. The good news: research shows that people typically overestimate their holiday-season weight increase—most don’t actually gain much more than one pound. The catch is they usually never lose that pound. So the best plan of action is the balance the fun, the calorie intake and the physical activity. The first thing you have to do is assume that you’ll probably be faced with more quantities of higher calorie food for the next month or so, and that you’ll also be spending more time inside—moving…

So, here’s a spicy potato soup that’ll fill and warm you up without adding all the fat and calories that seem to sneak into a lot of soups. 2 slices turkey bacon 1 cup…

    Beating Ana by Shannon Cutts

  • You must try

    Shannon Cutts
    24 Jan 2012 | 8:29 am
I know it’s hard to do this work, to rally enough to even make the attempt, when you feel worthless, ugly, unlovable, and all those feelings I also used to feel. But you must try. When I first started to heal, my motivation had nothing to do with feeling worthy of it. But I saw there were other people around me, fat people, thin people, rich people, poor people, old people, young people—who lived with much more happiness and joy than I did. So I started to believe it was possible for me to change too and be more like them—happier, more alive. (-Quote from "Beating Ana", Chapter: The…

    Fighting Anorexia

  • To eat or not to eat

    anne.s.reinhardt@gmail.com (Anne-Sophie Reinhardt)
    27 Jan 2012 | 4:56 am
We all know those days when we simply cannot focus. Our thoughts are scattered, every word we write seems wrong and we just cannot focus on our day’s work. And at the end of the day we have managed to achieve very little, at best. When a part of your brain called Annerexia deliberately tries to sabotage you, those days look a bit different. Or at least in my case, they do. It’s been a year since I decided to fight against my disorder, but the voice in my head still roars at me from time to time for not behaving the way it wants me to. I can’t ever predict when this will…
  • 11 lies your eating disorder likes to tell

    25 Jan 2012 | 3:18 am
Eating disorders exist because they feed your brain with enormous amounts of false beliefs, contradictions and flat-out lies. I have uncovered a few of those. “You are fat.” No matter how skinny you are, no matter the size of jeans you wear, your eating disorder will always tell you how fat you are. It doesn’t matter if you can see all your ribs and bones, if the veins on your arms stick out, if your cheeks are hollow, you are fat. It doesn’t make sense, does it? Well, your eating disorder hardly ever makes sense. So, NO, you are not fat. Maybe you cannot see it yet,…

During our trip to Australia back in early December, my husband and I stumbled into this crazy thing called The Edge. What is The Edge, you ask? Well, The Edge is a glass cube that projects 3 meters out from one of the skyscrapers, Skydeck 88, of Melbourne. You are almost 300 meters above the ground and you feel like there’s no security around you whatsoever. It was thrilling and terrifying at the same time, especially since we’re both scared of heights. I have no idea what possessed us to go ahead and do it. Maybe we wanted to proof something to ourselves? Maybe we wanted to show…

    18 Jan 2012 | 4:48 am
Exercise was always something I shared a love – hate relationship with. My passion for exercise came early on in my life. I loved doing gymnastics, ballet, played tennis and danced Jazz. Later, I added to that list my beloved HipHop, a hobby, I wish I would not have given up during a time of depression. When anorexia kicked in, everything turned around. I started to abuse exercise in many ways. Dancing alone wasn’t enough anymore. I began to work out radically, crying while doing so. A day without a workout was a strenuous task for my mind. I would feel like a failure, literally…
