The Efficacy of Self-Help Group Treatment and Therapist-Led Group Treatment for Binge Eating Disorder.
1 Nov 2009 | 3:00 pmConclusions Therapist-led group cognitive-behavioral treatment for binge eating disorder led to higher binge eating abstinence rates, greater reductions in binge eating frequency, and lower attrition compared to group self-help treatment. Although these findings indicate that therapist delivery of group treatment is associated with better short-term outcome and less attrition than self-help treatment, the lack of group differences at follow-up suggests that self-help group treatment may be a viable alternative to therapist-led interventions. Binging's in the Eye of the Beholder
26 Oct 2009 | 4:00 pmHere's something I hadn't thought about before. The definition of binge-eating disorder (BED) says that binges involve eating more food than most people would expect you to eat in a relatively short time. So what if all of the people in your world don't find your eating out of the ordinary? Another way of asking this question: Could the definition of BED be culturally-dependent? A blurb about a recent study suggests that black women meet BED criteria less often than white women. One of the project's researchers says, "These (black) women could be binge eating, but they may have less anxiety…

Raise Your Potato Chip and Salute!
4 Nov 2009 | 9:32 pmI feel compelled to comment on a quote from Karl Lagerfeld, head designer at Chanel. In response to the notion that some people would like to see more "normal"-sized models, Lagerfeld offered this: "No one wants to see curvy women...You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly." Is he saying that all fat women are mothers, or all mothers are fat? Both? Not clear. I'm also aware that Chanel advertises on those televisions pretty regularly. Hmm. Plenty more could be said about this statement; I'll leave that to you. My… -

Andrea's birthday
30 Oct 2009 | 10:51 amYesterday we celebrated what would have been Andrea's 30th birthday. It so very surreal to think that she has been gone for 10 years and would be beginning her third decade. For us she is forever 19. I started the day with an early, early morning hot tub soak and the praying of the rosary. Although my spiritual path has veered away from the Catholicism of my youth, I began the ritual of praying the rosary on Andrea's birthday a number of years ago. The second host family Andrea lived with in Spain when she was 14 were devout Catholics and Andrea was taught to pray the rosary with them. I use… -
Why is a "Fat-Talk" free environment important?
21 Oct 2009 | 9:06 amBy now I would imagine that you are all aware that this is Tri-Delta's "Fat-Talk Free" week. When I mentioned this at one of our local high schools a few weeks ago the "Why?" question arose. Why attempt to end fat talk (i.e.: Do I look fat in this? She shouldn't wear that! It's a shame...you have such a pretty face! I HATE my thighs! and on and on)? There are studies that present evidence that fat-talk actually lowers one's self-esteem which can lead to body hatred and possible problematic behaviors to attempt to feel better. There is also enough research to show that by the ages of two or… -

7 Oct 2009 | 9:14 pmIn our local newspaper there is a column occasionally written by Carolyn Hax called Dear Carolyn--she writes for the Washington Post so I'm guessing her column is syndicated. On September 18th a letter appeared from a woman asking for relationship advice. Tom pointed it out to me as he thought the response was a good one. I agree. The reader's letter begins, "I am in a committed, three-year relationship with a great man. He has the genetic disposition to become overweight if he doesn't watch what he eats." This woman goes on to talk about how she's let him know that she's not attracted to… -

15 Sep 2009 | 8:17 pmThis is a difficult post to write. It is a continuance of my August 20th blog entitled, "A challenge" where I wrote about how I planned on wearing a dress to the NEDA conference that revealed a part of my body that I often keep covered (my chest). My experience in living in this dress for an entire day was less than ideal. I realized--of course after the fact--that it would have made more sense and been more appropriate to wear the challenge dress to the Thursday night opening social. Friday was the day I knew I'd be introducing myself to new people and talking about new offerings from… -

By now, you've heard of Filippa Hamilton, the former Ralph Lauren model, who was fired for being too big. Hamilton stands 5-foot-10-inches, weighs 120 pounds, and wears a Size 4 (and likely would be a smaller size if not for her height). Now, Sidibe, a NYC-born and raised, 26-year-old, African-American actress, happens to be fat. 350 pounds fat.The film's director, Lee Daniels, speaks of Sidibe: "'She is unequivocally comfortable in her body, in a very bizarre way. Either she's in a state of denial or she's so elevated that she's on another level.'" The magazine notes that when Sidibe was 11, her aunt offered to pay for a cruise if her niece lost 50 pounds. Kelly Clarkson, You're Not Alone
21 Sep 2009 | 4:43 amA friend of mine recently revealed to me a (new?) trend that took me by surprise. Her daughter, who just began preschool, will sit for school pictures this week. Here's the thing: Parents were offered the opportunity to have their children's photos airbrushed! The idea is that that stray hair, a facial blemish, or any other unsightly addition can be wiped away for eternity. I'd like to know from parents (and prospective parents alike) if you'd elect to have your child's pictures airbrushed. What factors would you weigh in your decision? Would it make a difference if you could approve the…

Saying Goodbye to Ed…
30 Oct 2009 | 5:17 amIndividuals with eating disorders often express frustration because other people in their lives who have never had an eating disorder, just don’t seem to fully understand how difficult it is to live with this disease. Furthermore, once you have lived with an eating disorder, its often very difficult to imagine life without it - to imagine being recovered. The Center for Eating Disorders’ 2009 Fall Awareness event, on Sunday, October 25th, helped to address both of the above scenarios. Featured keynote speaker, Jenni Schaefer, visited Baltimore and spoke to a crowded… -
Application Awareness
26 Oct 2009 | 5:58 amDr. Harry Brandt, Director at the Center for Eating Disorders, was recently quoted in a blog entry on ChicagoTribune.com. The article discussed the negative impact that some smart phone applications can have on those individuals who are suffering from or are at-risk for developing an eating disorder. In light of this article, we’re re-posting an earlier entry we wrote on the subject in an attempt to generate awareness about this potentially dangerous trend. They can navigate you safely to your destination, identify a song playing in the background, and keep you busy with… -

In anticipation of her arrival in Baltimore in two , we had a few… -
Body Diversity is Glamorous…and Healthy!
7 Oct 2009 | 2:51 pmSocial networking sites and blogs are buzzing with celebration after Glamour Magazine’s November issue, released yesterday, featured models who represent the sizes and shapes of the average American woman. In addition to the photo shoot, Glamour pledged, to maintain a continued devotion to showing a diverse range of body sizes within its pages and to take a stance in support of equal opportunities for models of all sizes in the fashion industry. While still wrestling with the inaccurate and misleading term of “plus-sized model”, Glamour’s photo spread… -
Awareness vs. Obsession: Nutrition Information in College Dining Halls?
2 Oct 2009 | 10:57 amThere has been a firestorm of discussion recently around the issue of displaying nutrition facts (i.e. calories, fat grams) on labels placed in front of food items in college dining halls. While the issue has been hotly debated on many campuses, including Yale and Harvard, it has also become a focus of national attention. In response to the growing controversy, Newsweek recently posted a web exclusive article titled “Rethinking the Freshman 15″. The question posed in the article is whether posting nutrition information promotes health or promotes an unhealthy obsession…

Magical Benefits of Meditation for people with Eating Disorders.
11 Oct 2009 | 8:03 pmMany researches have proven now that people with eating disorders get a lot of benefits from doing meditation. Eating disorder sufferers have disturbances in autonomic nervous system, problems with impulse control and many emotional problems. All these can be improved with regular meditation. You see, human beings are made up of three components—physical, mental and emotional. You can think of it as like a triangle with the same length sides. To correct eating disorders all the sides of triangle have to be balanced. The Mental side represents the knowledge people learn about their condition… -

Adult Eating Disorders - How to Deal If the Person Doesn’t Admit Having One
27 Sep 2009 | 7:08 amIf you are dealing with an adult who suffers from an eating disorder, then you should adjust your talk to a relevant format. Remember, an adult may use stronger language than a child would use. Do not get angry. It will not do any good, and will probably make things worse. Plus, the sufferer will not want to confide in you. Remember that your appearance and tone of your voice should make her/him feel that you are coming with an open heart, and you do it only because you love her/him and care very much about the person: that you don’t have any intention of putting them down or… -
5 Crucial Steps to Cure Your Eating Disorder with the Power of Neuroplasticity.
24 Sep 2009 | 9:12 amNeuroplasticity is the ability of the human brain to change itself based on how we live our lives. Our brain consists of cells or neurons that are interconnected. It means that different life experiences and different behaviours are constantly changing the strength of these connections, by adding or removing connections, and by adding new cells. “Plasticity” relates to learning by adding or removing connections, or adding cells. According to the theory of neuroplasticity, thinking, learning, and acting actually change the brain’s physical structure or anatomy as well as functional…

Pre-Teen Obesity: An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth 100 Pound Cure
2 Nov 2009 | 2:24 pmWhether you live on the west coast or the east coast, the silent killer called obesity is aggressively moving through our communities. More than likely, if you are not directly affected, the chances are that you have friends or family members who are loosing control of their weight. In all honesty, we can not totally place the blame for this on the individuals themselves. Several studies have shown that for a number of people, their chemical and genetic makeup aide in their body’s ability to process certain fats. Sure being 100 plus pounds over weight might have been good in the Ice Age… -

How Harmful Is Bulimia Nervosa?
5 Oct 2009 | 2:37 amIt may come as a shock to some people to know the long-term and harmful effects of bulimia. Obsession on physical image, weight and self-esteem issues are some of the components that make up bulimia. If this goes unnoticed, then the person may suffer extreme damages to the health and may eventually lead to death. Then there are the psychological issues which more people are afraid of than the physical, because it is the psychological problems which make your life a misery and is the trigger for starting a bulimia recovery program. Bulimia begins with an extreme need to focus on bodily…

(She'll also find this, from her father and brother.)I've only given my daughter, who suffered from anorexia, a few books about eating disorders. Life Without ED (Jenni's first) and this one are the only patient narratives I've ever recommended. The pressures that can lead to disordered eating include academic worries, athletic performance, binge drinking and fears of the “freshman 15” weight gain. -

Study Says French Teens not Obsessed with Thinness
28 Oct 2009 | 3:59 amFrance has long been associated with fashion, and fashion has unfortunately been linked with unhealthy body image, so it would seem to follow that French teens are at great risk for developing unrealistic expectations related to body size.Surprisingly, a three-year study involving about 500 French teens indicates otherwise. An Oct. 23 article on the British news website Times Online provided the following details about the research:The teenagers tended to reject Kate Moss as an example of beauty, citing instead the pop star Beyonce and Amel Bent, the French singer. Most preferred a photograph… -

The smart use of rewards in working with your anorexic child
1 Nov 2009 | 8:43 pmOften Marcia works with young anorexic patients who are struggling to reach the healthy goal weight that the family, the doctor, and Marcia have agreed upon. Typically little gains are followed by losses, often caused by a stressful goings on in the adolescent or young adult’s life, power struggles between the patient and her (or his) parents, or ambivalence about recovery. Marcia’s patient Zoe came to her last appointment down 1.3 pounds, to 118.6 pounds. It was only 1.4 pounds away from her goal weight of 120 pounds, and yet that 1.4 pounds represents a huge psychic leap for Zoe,… -
Beware of the “Cookie Diet”
22 Oct 2009 | 7:29 pmI don’t usually address the latest fad diet, but the so-called Cookie Diet pushes my buttons. In today’s New York Times, an article entitled “A Few Cookies a Day to Keep the Pounds Away?” by Abby Ellin details the kooky regimen of a certain Dr. Sanford Siegel, whose Dr. Siegel ‘s Cookie Diet apparently has fans ranging from legal secretaries to celebrities singing its praises. The diet calls for eating six of Dr. Siegel’s cookies a day, and one “real” meal, for a total of about 1,000 calories. I have in jest called my Food Plan “the dessert diet” because I recommend… -
Chain restaurant calorie counts, a year later
6 Oct 2009 | 8:11 pmA story in today’s New York Times, Calorie Postings Don’t Change Habits, Study Finds , detailed evidence that posting calorie counts prominently at four fast food chains, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken, did not reduce the number of calories customers consumed. The study, which was conducted by researchers at New York University and Yale, tracked about 1,100 receipts of customers in poor black and Hispanic areas in New York City and Newark, N.J. It seems that in these neighborhoods, cost is a bigger factor than nutrition, and posting calories didn’t make… -
A new iceberg appears on the map of eating disorders
29 Sep 2009 | 1:16 pmDear Readers, It’s been getting a little academic on this blog the past few posts, so we thought we’d lighten it up a bit and talk about a new online eating disorder self-help resource that launched recently. It’s called Iceberg, and you’ll find it online at: www.eatingdisorderselfhelp.com. The website originates out of the Marino Therapy center in Dublin, Ireland, which means there are a few stylistic differences you’ll have to get used to, such as our common nemesis going by the name “eating distress” instead of “eating disorders.” Everything is more subdued and polite in… -

This continuation of the post details how the team translated their program into a method that parents could use at home. Dr. Leichner and his staff then went back to Intensive Treatment Service patients who had successfully recovered using the meal support program and asked them, “If you had to tell family and friends what was helpful to you and what was not, what would you tell them?” The…

Mindfulness as a Recovery Tool
2 Nov 2009 | 9:11 amThe practice of mindfulness is particularly important to those struggling with eating disorders. This is because it is so easy for an individual to become consumed with eating disorder thoughts, which by definition are not positive or self-affirming.“I look like a pig … if I eat this meal I will get fat … no one likes me… if I was thin, I would have friends.” How often do such thoughts, or others like them, come to mind? And the problem is, there is never just one thought; one leads to another to another. Soon they are tripping over each other, trying to take center stage, leaving… -
