Developing a positive body image isn’t necessarily easy and often takes a lot of work.  Creating a body positive Facebook page, however, can be easy with a few simple steps… If you haven’t done this yet, start by recognizing any negative or positive effects that  your Facebook use may be having on your self-esteem or body image.  How often do you publicly or privately criticize your own body while on Facebook?  How much time do you spend comparing your body to other people’s bodies online? Do your comments on other people’s photos regularly focus on weight or…

  • Rumination and body dissatisfaction interact to predict concurrent binge eating.

    5 May 2012 | 10:00 pm
Authors: Gordon KH, Holm-Denoma JM, Troop-Gordon W, Sand E Abstract Based upon the escape theory (Baumeister, 1991; Heatherton & Baumeister, 1991) and the emotional cascade model (Selby, Anestis, & Joiner, 2008), it was hypothesized that body dissatisfaction and rumination tendencies would interact to predict concurrent binge eating symptoms. This hypothesis was tested in a sample of 780 undergraduate students. The results conformed to prediction, in that individuals with high levels of body dissatisfaction were most likely to report binge eating behavior when they also had a tendency to…

Abstract: Recent research has identified self-monitoring behaviors as important strategies for both initial weight loss and weight loss maintenance, but relatively little is known about adopters and nonadopters of these behaviors. To test our hypothesis that key characteristics distinguish adopters from nonadopters, we examined the demographic characteristics and eating behaviors (eg, restrained, uncontrolled, emotional, and binge eating) associated with more frequent compared with less frequent use of these behaviors. Baseline demographic characteristics and eating behaviors as well as…

Future research therefore should seek to identify predictors of decreased BE following surgery in order to enhance candidate selection and improve the efficacy of this form of obesity management. There are so many quotable lines in the blog post, "Fantasy of Being Thin" that I have given up trying. You just have to read it. Suffice it to say that ALMOST EVERY WOMAN I KNOW needs to read this Shapely Prose post. If you're struggling with your weight, if you're pissed off that I keep telling you to stop struggling with your weight, if you are delaying or avoiding ANYTHING "until I lose weight," read this to understand that accepting the body you have isn't enough, it is accepting the loss of the fantasy of what you'd be and what you'd be "once I lose the weight." "She’s just not thin."…

Charlotte really sums it up here.  I sometimes do feel a bit funny that so much of my life is spent "with" people who don't live anywhere near me and yet they are very real and the relationship is far more than just about eating disorders. My family teases me, and my friends on the ground find it a bit funny, too - but with friends like Charlotte who needs.... to clean the house for visitors! (Actually, Charlotte knows just where I keep the unmatched socks, has gotten me through a crying jag or three, and served as shoe consultant - and has no illusions about the dust levels, either!)

I met danceswithfat! It was at the last night party at ICED in Austin and I was introduced to the uber-cool blogger, danceswithfat, whose dance moves I admire as much as her blogitude. Wish I'd known she was there earlier, we could have talked longer - or busted a move! Here's why I love her: "what if you did it now with the body you have now?" I know too many people who are waiting to enjoy their lives, to LIVE their lives, "until I lose that 10 pounds." They may even avoid the very things that make them feel better - like dancing - because they somehow don't deserve them at their weight or…

In fact, you might not even have to change providers in order to reduce your auto insurance costs as it is possible to some cost benefits through reviewing your current motor insurance policy. One way to change your present insurance into low priced motor insurance is to spend your whole bill up-front rather than deciding on the monthly payment plan. While it can be tough to come up with the greater summarize front, spending your whole quality at the same time substantially lower your…

Moving across town isn’t a reason to change companies, since it probably will not affect your insurance charges by very much, whenever. If you’re moving apparent to the other end of a state, you might wish to contact agents in that area and get a quote from them. You could find that the new area you are moving to has cheaper rates from certain insurance firms. Insurance, death and taxes? We all know the old adage that you cannot prevent death and taxes, but must we consider adding cheap car insurance quotes to that statement? In our modern world you can not easily survive with out…

Auto Insurance Automobile insurance usually pays a commission of between 5 and 10 percent. Sales made on the Internet pay less than direct sales. Renewals may be lower than the first year or period. The commission per sale is lower for online car insurance quotes, with the requirement being that the agent could offer a greater volume that adds up to higher pay. House Insurance Home insurance typically gives around a 10 to 20 percent commission, with the normal being 15 percent. The percentage is higher since it is more work intensive. Home insurance agents do inspections of the house,…

With a large amount of space inside and comfortable sitting for the whole family, a truck is the ideal competitor for the name of a ‘ excellent family car ‘. Aside from attending to the requirements of a large family, vehicles will also be the favored vehicle for carrying baggage from one spot to yet another.      ****We are constantly bombarded with messages from the media that we should be thin and lean, and preferably, look like one of the models in magazines, on TV, on billboards, etc.  Sadly, many kids face this pressure at home, too.  Well meaning parents, alarmed by concern about their child's weight and health, often resort to imposed food restriction and diets to help their child "be healthy", "fit in", etc. This can be problematic because once dieting and food restriction are enforced, it is not uncommon for the child to then develop a tormented relationship with food that can…

By David Creel With bariatric surgery come major lifestyle changes and rapid weight loss. Adapting to these changes can be exciting, confusing, and sometimes distressing for patients and those closest to them. I commonly hear patients say, “I’m surprised when I look in the mirror or see pictures of myself.” For many, body image doesn’t keep up with the rapid weight loss. And spouses often need to adapt to having a more energetic and confident partner who may not need as much assistance with daily tasks. The good news about all of these changes is that most long-term effects are…

  • Mentoring Leaves No Room for Ed

    Shannon Cutts
    15 May 2012 | 9:19 am
Mentoring neatly circumvents the isolation in which an eating disorder flourishes by putting us in direct connection with each other—heart to heart, mind to mind, spirit to spirit. (-Quote from Beating Ana) The connection we offer the most time and attention to is the one that will be the strongest. I will say that again. The connection we offer the most time and attention is the one that will be the strongest. If we give most of our day, our mind, our body and our habits to Ed, then guess which connection we are strengthening? If, however, we keep ourselves continually occupied in…

I tried to write this post over and over again, but I always reverted back to one of my all-time favorite songs of Pink. I have been a fan of her since her very first song, have seen her in concert (which was on of the best concerts I’ve ever had the pleasure to see and I’ve been to uncountable ones) and am in awe of her voice and work. Pink has carried me through many dark, dark years and I could always relate to her music because her family issues, her struggles, her lyrics hit so close to home. Her songs remain the most played songs ever in my playlist and I don’t think…

In this episode of Fighting Anorexia, I talk about Crimes against Clients. I share my personal experience and those of my listeners and readers. I go into the following points: Weight There are many patients who experience not being helped because they are not underweight. People can starve themselves even if they are not underweight. It doesn’t mean that those who are underweight are more sick than those who are not. Everybody who eats disorder is in danger. Age The perception that eating disorders can’t happen to older people is absolutely wrong. If your doctor doesn’t…

There are three people that come to mind when I think of role models: my sister, my husband and Portia de Rossi. Let me explain… My sister has always, always been my biggest rock, my soul mate and the girl I looked up to despite her being three years younger than me. I love her drive, her confidence, her ability to embrace life in ways I thought I never could. Spending the weekend with her has shown me yet again how wonderful she is. She was there in the darkest hours of my life, never ever turning against me, but trying to help me in every way she could. I love her to pieces and hope…

Why am I telling you this? Well, the thing is that this is a huge step for me. Not only will I cook with her tonight, but we will also do brunch with our mom tomorrow. You see in the past this would have freaked me out. I would have to up my abuse of laxatives and the night at my sister’s would have been nothing short of a nightmare with cramps and shame. Your eating disorder is not your friend. Your eating disorder is your worst enemy. No matter what Ed/Ana/Mia tells you, it’s a lie. Eating disorders are inherently belittling, deceiving, mean creatures. They promise you that everything will get better if you only listen to their sweet words, but in reality everything gets worse if you follow their path. They paint a picture of perfection, glory and accomplishment that goes far beyond what every other human being can achieve. They make you feel superior. They more you feel in control. They make you cope with life. What they don’t…
